About this song
"Förrådd av Blod" tells the story of Erik XIV, one of Sweden's most tragic and complex kings-a ruler who rose to power with vision and intelligence, but ultimately fell victim to paranoia, isolation, and betrayal from within his own bloodline.
The song draws heavily from real historical events. As the son of Gustav Vasa, Erik inherited a strong and expanding kingdom. He was educated, ambitious, and deeply invested in strengthening Sweden's position in Europe. But over time, his growing mistrust of the nobility and fear of conspiracy began to consume him.
This internal struggle reached its breaking point during the Sture Murders, a brutal event that shocked the nation and marked the beginning of his downfall. From that moment on, Erik became increasingly isolated-both politically and mentally.
Eventually, he was deposed by his own brother, Johan III, and imprisoned. Years later, in 1577, Erik died in captivity. Modern analysis suggests that he was poisoned with arsenic-an ending as dark and symbolic as his reign.
The Song
"Förrådd av Blod" was written to capture not just the historical events, but the emotional core of Erik's story: the weight of the crown, the fear of betrayal, and the tragedy of a man losing control-both of his kingdom and of himself.
Musically, the track blends energetic folk elements-acoustic guitars, mandolin, and driving fiddle-with a strong rhythmic foundation of stomps and claps. The intention was to avoid a slow, mournful ballad and instead create something that feels alive, urgent, and almost celebratory on the surface-while carrying a darker story underneath.
The contrast is deliberate: a song you can sing along to, about a king who couldn't trust anyone.
