About this song
"Aughrim in the Rain" is inspired by the Battle of Aughrim, one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on Irish soil.
On July 12, 1691, the Jacobite army held strong defensive ground in heavy rain and thick mud. For hours, they resisted repeated attacks. Then everything changed. Their commander, Charles Chalmot de Saint-Ruth, was struck and killed by a cannonball. In that moment, confusion spread, the line broke, and thousands of soldiers were cut down as the army collapsed.
This song is written from the perspective of one of those soldiers - not as a hero, but as a witness to the moment everything fell apart.
Musically, the track blends fast, driving Irish folk elements with a darker, more emotional tone. The goal was to capture not the glory of battle, but the shock, fear, and loss that followed. The hoarse vocal delivery and raw instrumentation reflect the chaos of the field - rain, mud, smoke, and the realization that the fight was already lost.
"Aughrim in the Rain" is not just a retelling of history - it is an attempt to feel what it was like to stand there when it ended.
